Progesterone is primarily a female hormone produced by the ovaries in the corpus luteum during and after ovulation. It is also produced in the adrenal glands continuously in smaller quantities, and in the placenta during pregnancy.
Progesterone may enhance estrogen activity while also moderating symptoms of estrogen excess such as water retention, fat accumulation, uterine bleeding, and mood swings.
Progesterone helps support thyroid activity, and may also stimulate cells (osteoblasts) necessary for bone building. Like estrogen, progesterone declines with age. Progesterone is primarily the first hormone to become deficient during menopause. Progesterone balances estrogen, and when progesterone levels are low, a woman might experience breast tenderness, poor sleep and menorrhagia, weight gain, depression, and uterine bleed among others.
At Medrx, we are here to help a woman balance her “hormonal symphony”. Don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with one of our consultants.
